Our Reggio Emilia Early Childhood Education Program

Our unique Italian school, is a wonderful Reggio inspired environment with an Italian language program that will build kindergarten readiness & prepare children for higher learning in a safe, nurturing environment that fosters positive self-image, cooperation, independence, socialization , and a love of the Italian language, and culture. The  Reggio Emilia Approach is perfect in our “Italian”  setting. The approach is a natural, caring way of treating children. In Reggio, we respect children, and families, and allow collaboration to take place within the community. We are happy to offer a program our Reggio Emilio program, in our English/Italian preschool! We are open to children from 18 mos.-6 years of age. All members of our community are welcome. You don’t have to be Italian to attend. We just want to share the beauty of the language and culture. Our after-school program-dopo scuola- is available for children ages 6-14. We also offer adult language classes.

Our curriculum is fun. Our Italian language enrichment program for children, helps children learn the Italian language naturally-just like they would learn at home. Children work in the “traditional” way, with preschool activities that develop fundamental early childhood skills such as socialization, self confidence, imagination, reasoning, listening, sharing, creativity and motor coordination. An emphasis on skills such as letter and number recognition & the alphabet are enforced through visual aids, repetition & age-appropriate activities. Music, dance, storytelling, circle time, as well as creativity through arts and crafts are conducted in English & Italian in an interactive, nurturing, stimulating playful environment. A unique aspect of our preschool is our extremely low teacher-student ratio which ensures individualized attention. We have one teacher for 3 students. Our Italian language pre-school teachers work alongside the head teacher, in all the daily activities of learning, and playing. Our teachers all have experience in early childhood education. It is proven, & we firmly believe that the early childhood years determine a child’s learning style & potential for success in later years. We are committed to academic excellence and helping children learn the Italian language at a time when it comes easily-the early years. More than that we are committed to a joyful, happy experience for your child, and your family. Your child will learn to love learning.

Please keep in mind that a rest period from 1:00-2:30 p.m. will be a part of our curriculum, during times your child is here for programming that is longer than four hours. It is important for the benefit of the child. Children need a daily rest period in order to develop properly. They are not forced to sleep, only to have a quiet time. Children are read to prior to quiet time, and they are supervised at all times, while resting.

Uniforms will be worn at the school. Children in the dopo scuola will wear a school T shirt, or remain in their elementary school uniform while here. We feel that the uniforms fosters a sense of community and respect for one another. It is important that children do not focus on their clothing, but on being a child! See the parent board for uniform information.

Please bring the following to the center if your child is here more than two hours:

A change of clothing-pants, shirt, socks (non-uniform change is ok). Diapers/wipes too.
Rain “gear”.
Nap mat/blanket/pillow (take home on Fridays, or earlier if needed)
School lunch (we provide am/pm snack) Please provide a healthy lunch. We cannot heat food, so please, no micro-wave food. A simple protein, fruit, milk would be great!
Check the parent board daily for current information.

The Goal of Our Reggio Emilia Inspired School

First of all, as an American school-not a school in Italy- we are more comfortable using the term “inspired” by Reggio Emilia. We have studied this approach, and find it to be something we believe in. We feel it is a very humane, holistic approach to child care, and development. We respect children, and we are child advocates, first.

The Italian language enrichment component is a vital part of our programming. We feel that children will hear the language throughout the day, and learn it very naturally. And through our fun activities, flash cards, songs, and play, the children will learn and speak Italian. Below, you will find the areas of development that we will work on with your child.
